If there's such a thing as cabaret folk-rock, Jensen a frequently elliptical
songwriter whose spiritual forebears include James Taylor, and a postBilly
Joel piano man with extra strength in his fingers and throat is promoting
it. He also lays down some cosmopolitan funk, and a sly sense of humor emerges
in "My Baby and Me," about a happily hitched S&M couple. Rock pistons
Karen Mack and Lina Koutrakos back him on vocals, as does on a rediscovered
track the late, pure-voiced Nancy La Mott. Village Voice, March 24-30, 1999 Move over, Michael Feinstein, there's a new genius in the
room. Rick Jensen has been carting off all the New York cabaret awards
of late, and this debut album shows why. Cole Porter, Peter Allen, Tom
Lehrer, and Nancy Lamott must be beaming down on their collective progeny.
From deeply moving ballads like "The Heart Knows" to the S/M humor of
"My Baby and Me," Jensen makes adult, sophisticated, music that could
make seltzer taste like champagne. A special treat: a duet with the much-missed
Ms. LaMott. |
